Der Erste Geburtstag Feiern

Dear Great Gran,
thanks again for hosting Ruth's birthday party.
Maybe next year she won't need help with the candle?

You can see below that she really enjoyed trying out her birthday present from Gran and Pa which Grumpa hung from the blackwood tree.

Ruth enjoyed helping herself from the bucket when she went raspberry picking with Sue, Julie and I yesterday. I didn't mind the mess she was making because I couldn't see it!

Brendan

The Hair Apparent

Dear Great Gran,

Julie and I have ben enjoying eating lots of fresh local cherries, peaches and nectarines lately. Ruth also seems to enjoy eating them - but only after she has squeezed them to pulp, ripped them to shreds, chased them around a bit, painted with them, stuck them in her ear and behind her head etc. etc Her hair colour is still the subject of some debate, however I suspect it gets most of its red-orange colour from natural fruit dyes.

Last week we went down the coast for a maths conference. Ruth and I didn't do much maths - but we did have fun frolicing with the fauna...

..and swimming with Julie in the still-cold-from-winter water (with no wetsuit for the poor baby!)...

..and going for walks and exploring caves...

...but Ruth enjoyed playing in the warm rockpools the most.

We look forward to seeing you at Christmas!

much love,
Brendan

Moving!

Dear Gran,
We haven't written for a while as we have no internet at the new house yet. Why? Because the telecommunications company with the slogan "I've been everywhere, man" hasn't been able to provide us with the same internet service to an address 1km away from our old place!

It is a long time ago now but we did visit Joan and Alan when Julie indicated. We helped round up some cattle there (Ruth helped from inside the backpack) but Preston stayed under house arrest. It seems Preston's role on the farm is purely, um, ornamental.
Here is little one at our old home looking like she's ready for the big move (but in reality still being several weeks away from being able to crawl)

And here she is playing a duet with Cherie at the new house. Cherie has a knack of planning her holidays with us when we are moving home i.e. she plans them months before we even know that we're moving.

The new place has an interesting architectural feature in the orange bottle glass doors. They are very attractive in the afternoon light but mainly seem designed to screen views of the backyard and make the dining area dark.

Here we are on back deck with fledgling vegie patch beyond.

Here is our inaugral lunch on the deck with Neil, Ian, Heather, Leslie and Sue.

And here you can see little one's two teeth.

And since this photo was taken, she really is moving everywhere, man.
much love,

Brendan

September photos

Dear Gran,

here are some more Melbourne photos, from September:

Us, at your house! We had a lovely time visiting you. I haven't yet found out how we can play Scrabble over the Internet.

We visited a playground with Councillor Annabel and Tullio:

Annabel has now had her baby--- a lovely red-headed boy they have named Vincent.

Back at home:

Brendan is in charge of giving Ruth her bath every night before bed. She really enjoys the routine. She invents new games to play in the bath. The latest one is putting the bath toys in Brendan's mouth and on his head. This evening she poured the cup full of water over him. He was busy talking to me at the time, so that will teach him to pay attention.

In the photo above, I was sitting below the level of the lip of the bath (we put it on the change table), and she was peering at me through the plastic, and then springing up to look over the edge at me.

The new news: Ruth has grown two teeth in as many weeks. Maybe it's teething, maybe it's coincidental (hah hah!) but she has also been sleeping really badly, and waking up crying every hour or so. She seems to be improving the last two nights, though.

She isn't crawling yet. She sits up, is very good at turning herself around, and can kind of wiggle herself along, mostly backwards. She sometimes backs herself into a corner and has trouble getting out. Most of the other babies in her baby group are getting along at a great speed, so she gets a little bit overrun.

And, we move in to the new house on Saturday. Phone number should remain the same.

Hope you are well,

much love,

Julie.

Photos from Dinner Plain

Dear Gran,

how far behind we've gotten with this! We're now recovered from all the lurgies we've had. To begin the catching up, here are some photos from the Dinner Plain trip.

Firstly, the skiing: we only had one day of it, and as you can see in the photo above there was only a shallow cover. Ruth slept contentedly in the backpack for most of the time, but woke up to play at lunchtime.

Lunchtime after a walk. You can (kind of) see the snow on hotham in the background.

More lunchtimes--- this time out on the deck at the lodge.

Mum and Ruth.

Ruth touches her first lizard, which runs away.

I will add some photos from the Melbourne trip later on.

We saw Joan and Alan on the weekend--- they were in good form. I think we'll go and visit them in Goulburn (how do you spell that?) on the weekend.

Much love to you,

Julie.

Cousins

Dear Great Gran,
Julie's cousin Karen visited recently, with husband Dave and 10 month old Zac.
Here you can compare the relative hairiness of cousins Zac, Ruth and Jack.
Zac and Jack are pretty fast quadrapeds as is another of Ruth's cousins, Momo.
I feel I need to explain that Ruth only gapes like a stunned mullet when the camera comes out. OK, perhaps not only when the camera comes out - but it is certainly very hard to take a photo of her wearing any another expression! To illustrate the point, here Ruth is with Joseph, the other cousin she has been spending time with lately.
much love,
Brendan

Hats Off

Dear Great Gran,
Julie has taken to sitting Ruth inside the Laundry basket.
And what does Ruth like to play with and eat when she is in the basket?
much love,
Brendan

Alfresco Gumming

Dear Great Gran,
you can see Ruth did not have to wait long until the next grandparents arrived. Here she is al-fresco gumming on a piece of apple. Sue was poised to intercept the apple in case it tried to make a sudden leap for freedom.
Today after lunch at Sean and Sandra's place, Ruth demonstrated to her hosts how to sit up without assistance. I suspect that all the playing with new toys meant she was too preoccupied to remember to fall over.
It was a lovely sunny day, so we also walked up the hill behind their house. As you can see, Jack and Sam insisted on equal treatment to Ruth and so they were carried the entire way up to the top. (In their dreams.)
How many months do you think it will be before Ruth has more teeth than Sam?
much love
Brendan

Le Grand Tour

Dear Great Gran,

Not much to report here this week but here are two pictures taken by Colin when he and Lorraine visited the weekend before last.
Here Ruth is sitting in the drivers seat of Colin's car and happily listening to the live broadcast of the Saints beating Collingwood. Colin's happiness must've been infectious - or perhaps barracking for the Saints is genetic?
In the meantime, we are asking Ruth to conserve her cuteness until the visit of the other grand parents.
much love,
Brendan

Phase Changes

Dear Great Gran,
As Ruth has become more alert and less sleepy during the daytime, we have been wondering how may soporific baths are too many for one day?

You can see she is happy and relaxed afterwards...

...although a little perturbed by the frozen puddle outside.

Speaking of phases changes from liquid to solids, here Ruth is helping herself to her first meal of rice cereal. She grabbed the spoon from my hand and put it straight in her mouth!

Actually, the phrase "straight in her mouth" doesn't really do justice to the copious smearing of food on hands, face and clothes. Which is another reason for the frequent baths...
much love,
Brendan

Green Dwarf and Snow White

Dear Great Gran,

Sorry we haven't written for a few weeks , but our computer had frozen up. We have solved the problem be installing an oil heater in the study.

Here Julie perambulates with Ruth's prambulator in the winter sun.
Ruth is beginning to notice more of the world around her as she travels in her little cocoon. And here Little One is without a couple of the outer layers.
Finally, we had been told that by leaving old stiff nappies hanging out on the line overnight, they would become softened by the cool night air. But look what happened!
They were stiff as boards at 9.30am the following morning!
However, we did discover some advantages with this new technique, such as:
  • It was easier to stack nappies vertically and thus save space,
  • You could make a really neat and straight fold, and
  • They became snow white, although some of this disappeared once the frost fell off.
much love
Brendan
