Dear Gran,
As you can see from the previous entry, we did not have long to wait for our next guest to arrive! On Saturday morning, Andrew and I visited the recently opened Jewish Holocaust Memorial. As is appropriate for a German federal memorial, it is located in the heart of the capital close to the the Reichstag.
The memorial is made of thousands of grey blank concrete slabs. In theory this should be sombre enough but in practice it is a bit of a temptation for tourists to use it as a giant playground and play hide and seek. To find out what all these acres of concrete is supposed to be about, you have to queue up in a long line to go down into an underground information centre.
On Saturday afternoon, we all went cycling in Gruenewald Forest with Julie’s colleague Oliver and his stupendous Liegerad. Oliver is quick to inflict his infernal contraption on all newcomers and – as you can see – Andrew was no exception.
A short while later: here is Oliver, a reclining Andrew, a speedy Julie and a crouched rollerblader slipstreaming behind another cyclist. Oliver made us delicious Rosti for dinner.
On Sunday, we made a daytrip to Spreewald with Josh, Emily and the Joker II. This is a forest and canal district where farmers traditionally grow very big gherkins and even bigger mosquitoes.
We had fun messing about on the canals in a Dreier kayak and a Zweier kayak, but don’t be fooled by the sunshine: we all got drenched in torrential rain during a Donner und Blitzen Sturm.
love from
Brendan
